Where I sailed from there is a friendly face on every corner. While stopped in Gloucester I saw a used condom on every street corner. In New Jersey there was a hair salon on every corner. Here there is a character on every corner. It’s a continuous parade of people dressed in their city life costumes. I see short skirts and tall boots. A pink hair and pierced cheek woman walking a dog on a leash. A dog walking a dog on a leash. A mother walking their child on a leash. A man walking a man on a leash. Another man wears a snake as a shawl.
Pacing up and down the streets of the city, my small town eyes marvel at the spectacle. I have been away from the so-called “real world” for a while.
Will city life drown my spirit?

I can’t afford to fit in here. I don’t have the money, space, or desire to buy tall black boots, short skirts, sleeveless shirts, or fancy phones used as best friends and accessories. So instead, I took the change collecting in the bottom of my coin purse and treated myself to some black fingernail polish.

Good choice. And the acetone remover is good to mix with 5200 when you need to get a good seal in a tight place the thick stuff just won’t seep into.
Replenish the kitty and go. Not Dory, the other kitty.

I am guessing you are in Key West ? I think that is the original set for the “Star Wars” bar scene. I agree, city life is not for me either, especially where you feel like you have left the solar system.

Teresa, I hear your voice in your writing..I’ve been a Dad for a long time. The city large or small is not for you. Only you can change that. Sorry, your post today struck me as sad.

Awww…the “cruising kitty!” I changed my “Dory button” on the right sidebar of this blog to imitate your comment. Now he is the cyber panhandling cat!
Rick! Yep…I would rather be sailing and writing. But that doesn’t pay the bills. I am working on some web design and social media consulting and if that work kicks off (which will take some time), then I can do that remotely and continue to cruise. Until then, I’ll stay put for a while.

I have spent a fair bit o’ time in key weird, its addictive, & mind bending at first but in short order becomes boring & depressing… stop by the stock island, west marine and ask for Roz, she lives on a boat with her hubby Travis & 2 year old son Finn… she is a lovely Brit ex-pat and always willing to help out sista sailors….
kindest regards,
dan

Danville and Mark,
I’ve been to Key West before. That town has a weird tourist vibe all on its own. But the water is pretty there.

Teresa,
All of this “City Life” stimulation is necessary. As a Writer and a Seeker, you are an observer. As a writer / seeker myself, I can relate to what you put in your blog. It’s fuel for the fire sister. You know this. Use it as the tool it is and move along… richer for the glancing blow it’s provided your soul. The black nail polish? You dip that toe into that puddle and you may come up soaking wet! All the best.
Fair winds and quick release.

“Will city life drown my spirit?” It will if you let it but you won’t. I think what will happen is your spirit, your love of life, of simplicity, your joy will help someone in the city that is drowning. You are an inspiration.

Ahoy Teresa,
It has been a little while since I have checked in here. Remember, “Attitude: The difference between an ordeal and an adventure.”
Enjoy the journey.

Gee Teresa, reading you comments on city life seemed somewhat familiar to my own when I lived in Philly for about a four year time in my 20’s. I was the true “country mouse”. I grew up on a farm with horses, sheep, cats and dogs along with any wild animal I brought home so when my Dad said I should give city life a try, it was a shock to my system. Never knew that buildings could share walls (as in townhomes or row homes) I always felt I was victimized while there by my apt. being robbed, my car vandilized, strange folks that lived on the steam vents on the streets of one of the countries largest cities. I can tell you as I look back on it today (30 years later), it is a plaid patch in my life that has become a colorful quilt of experiences. It is not the issue that it is quirky, expensive or not the direction you wish to live BUT it is an exposure to how others work and spend their lives in their life style. It provides a contrast to the direction you wish to focus and that is OK. It gives you an opportunity to confirm your goals and desired choices. Choose to enjoy the opportunities and when they are not fun, know you can always change them. You steer your life just like your lovely vessel. You can always make course adjustments.
Glad to read that Dory is recovering from his bladder sand/stone issues. Good luck with your house cleaning gig. Leslie
