Sail Training Expeditions! Learn to sail. Offshore and coastal.

We are now accepting applications for a summer season of New England coastal and offshore sail training and leadership expeditions. For each expedition, we will select four adventurous crew members to join us for a rigorous voyage that will depart from Rockland, Maine and explore the New England coast. The longer voyages may even venture as far as Nova Scotia.

This season we are sailing in our favorite cruising grounds. Scattered along the northeast coast are cozy anchorages that can be isolated or adjacent to a charming picturesque town. The granite seashore is rugged and beautiful and offers many natural sailing challenges such as thick fog, commercial traffic, hidden rocks, dramatic weather patterns, fast-flowing currents, and a steep tidal change.

Your training voyage is sure to include early mornings wake ups, rugged training drills, cozy accommodations, and most certainly an adventure like none other. Each crew member is expected to take part in all the daily responsibilities aboard including steering, navigating, standing watch, cooking, and anchoring, to name a few. And despite a full curriculum of daily lessons, practical skills training, and drills, I’m sure we will find time for a dip in the chilly waters or a mountain hike.

What is unique about our sail training program is that not only will you learn the technical skills required to sail a boat safely, but you’ll also be trained in communication, leadership, the role of the captain, and creating a shipboard culture of positive camaraderie. Our goal is that every crew member walks away with sailing skills, real life leadership skills, and a feeling that they all got there together. Most students who sail with us walk away with the feeling that they learned much more than they expected to in sailing, safety, and especially leadership, communication, and crisis management. No experience is required, only an adventurous spirit and desire to learn. Because we want to keep the training effective and highly personal, we are limiting the crew size to only four. The minimum age is 18. Apply early to reserve your berth.

Took a quick read through the application, I apologize if I missed it. Is there a minimum age requirement?

    Many thanks,

Hi, Just to let you know that your application form for sail training expeditions is not downloading properly -- comes out in jumbled letters and not able to be understood at all.

Hello! How do you register for the women’s-only session?

It isn’t listed on the schedule, because a few enthusiastic ladies just organized it. There are two spots left. Just download the application packet and in the “expedition preference” section use expedition code MoA-1W for the course from July 26-August 1. Follow the rest of the instructions in the packet to apply. Its going to be a great course!

What do you miss taking the 7 day class vs the 9 or 12 day courses ?

    Best regards,

As with anything, the more practice you get, the more skilled you become. Learning to sail thoroughly can take a lifetime of experiences. I continue to learn new skills year after year. Ben and I are prepared to teach you anything we can. We teach to the level the student is at, and we have a nearly endless curriculum to pull from. 12 days simply gets you more.
